A note from the project team-
Welcome and thank you for considering 385 West 12th Street.
We acquired and combined the two lots between Washington and West Streets in 2006, after recognizing their profound historic and cultural significance. The property was previously occupied by Diane von Furstenberg, a fashion icon unmistakably associated with the neighborhood’s elegance and charm. Ms. Von Furstenberg shared with us her affinity for this place – her handprints are preserved in the sidewalk – and she has moved only a few blocks to the north. Indeed, the character of the West Village is captivating, and residents are often reluctant of change.
It has been critical for us to engage in a discourse that is respectful of this reluctance. And yet to replicate is not to engage. So we began by meticulously choosing materials: the copper will slowly acquire a reassuring patina; the glasswork, carefully detailed and sized, will register the interiors specific programming and occupation. We then designed layouts with respect for distinct domestic programs, referencing and updating the fine traditions present only in Manhattan’s best apartment houses. Scale was paramount. The building’s 12 residents will enjoy, in relative solitude, amenities commonly found only in much larger buildings.
On every level, 385 West 12th Street is unabashedly new. The recognition of its past and consideration for its future have guided its development. As we describe the project in the following pages, we present passages that we found helped evoke the essence of this project. Enjoy.
